Orange is the New Black star wants to scrap 'divisive' LGBT acronym

Not everyone agrees with Lea Delaria here (especially because some think the term queer carries to much homophobic baggage), but she makes a good argument:

“LGBTQQTY-whatever-LMNOP tends to stress our differences. And that’s why I refuse to do it,” she said.

The number of labels available to the community are bountiful.

From pansexual to demi-sexual, there are a variety of ways to identify yourself.

However, the actress claims the umbrella term queer is being adopted by more people in a bid to erase the negative stigma attached to it.

The Urban Dictionary takes the following approach:

queer: Originally pejorative for gay, now being reclaimed by some gay men, lesbians, bisexuals and transgendered persons as a self-affirming umbrella term. Caution: still extremely offensive when used as an epithet.

We definitely need a more simpler alternative to LGBTQAI that covers the diversity of sexual and gender nonconformity. “Queer” may be the one.
