UK Trans+ Research Conference founder establishes academic network for transgender research

image

The Trans+ Research Conference, founded by psychologist Dr. Gillian Russell and Beyond Reflections, aims to revolutionize trans-related academia by promoting innovative and imaginative research.

The conference, held at Bournemouth University, featured a diverse range of speakers, including PhD and Masters students, established academics, and researchers from fields such as psychology, media studies, and cancer research.

Dr. Russell emphasizes the need for unique studies that challenge conventional approaches, arguing that repetitive research fails to advance understanding of trans issues.

The conference was inspired by the controversial Cass Review, which critics argue misrepresented trans healthcare. Dr. Russell believes that rigorous, evidence-based research is essential to counter misinformation and improve societal acceptance of trans people.

The event also highlighted the importance of collaboration, with plans to establish the Trans+ Network Hub—a research center designed to connect scholars and foster groundbreaking studies. The initiative seeks to break academic barriers and push trans research forward.

TGEU report shows setbacks in human rights of trans people across Europe and Central Asia

image

Transgender Europe (TGEU) has released its annual trans rights map, revealing an alarming regression in trans rights across Europe and Central Asia.

For the first time in 13 years, setbacks in trans rights outweigh progress, signaling a broader crisis in democracy and fundamental freedoms.

The report highlights coordinated anti-trans campaigns linked to far-right movements, including Trump-aligned networks and Kremlin-backed efforts.

Countries like Hungary and Georgia have enacted constitutional amendments restricting trans rights, while the UK Supreme Court has ruled against trans equality.

Despite these setbacks, there have been victories, such as the Court of Justice of the European Union affirming trans protections in Romania and France. However, right-wing forces continue to challenge these rulings.

TGEU writes:

//TGEU calls on the EU to adopt and proactively implement a strong EU LGBTI Strategy with a clear focus on the human rights of further marginalised groups — trans people, Black people and People of Colour, disabled people, intersex people, asylum seekers, sex workers, and people living with HIV.

The new strategy should build upon the lessons learnt from the 2020-2025 Strategy and address widening gaps in human rights and healthcare access.

In the new Strategy, the EU Commission needs to commit to supporting Member States with the implementation of EU law on the rights of trans people and hold Member States accountable for their implementation.

‘Gender identity’ and ‘gender expression’ must be included in all EU Commission initiatives on gender equality and be considered grounds for anti-discrimination protections under EU law.

Finally, the EU should enforce its global leadership in promoting LGBTI equality, particularly in accession and neighbourhood countries, by embedding strong human rights benchmarks into foreign policy.//

French trans man wins state funding for surgery as legal right

image

A French court has issued a landmark ruling in favor of a transgender man, ordering the Bas-Rhin Primary Health Insurance Fund (CPAM) to cover his mastectomy.

The Strasbourg judicial court found that CPAM’s refusal violated the European Convention on Human Rights by creating unequal access to healthcare based on gender identity. The court also awarded the plaintiff €3,000 in damages, recognizing the harm caused by delays in his medical transition.

The plaintiff, who began his transition in 2017, faced multiple administrative hurdles before turning to the courts. His lawyer, Laura Gandonou, hailed the ruling as the first in France to recognize CPAM’s refusal as discriminatory. She hopes it will set a precedent for other trans individuals facing similar obstacles.

The case highlights broader issues in France, where trans people often struggle to obtain healthcare coverage. Several other lawsuits are pending, with activists calling for systemic reforms to ensure equal treatment.

Gallup poll shows mixed attitudes towards trans people in the US

image

A Gallup poll shows that even if a majority of Americans think it is morally wrong “to change ones gender”, they are - for the most part - defending trans people’s right to gender affirming health care.

A relatively small majority think it is wrong to change ones gender. As you will see below, this statement collides with the acceptance of gender affirming health care. It might be that some see “changing ones gender” as morally wrong, but yet believe that doing so must be up to the individual.

The question does not go into what they believe will be the effects of trans acceptance in society.

image

A clear majority does not want to ban gender affirming therapy for minors.

image
image

Americans do not want trans people to compete on teams restricted to their own gender. (The question is flawed, as the term “birth gender” is not defined).

image

A significant percentage know someone who is trans, but this clearly does not have the same pro-LGBTQ effect as the larger number who know gay or lesbian people. This is important as it is harder to dehumanize someone you know.

image

Compare this with those who know someone who is gay or lesbian. In other words: The more trans people who become visible socially, the less likely people are to be transphobic. This is one of the reasons why haters want to force trans people out of public spaces.

image

A clear majority wants to allow trans people to serve in the military, even though the anti-trans propaganda has clearly had an effect.

Real scientists unmask the anti-transgender Cass Review as methodologically flawed and misleading

image

The Cass Review, a widely cited report on gender-affirming care in the U.K., has been heavily criticized by researchers for its methodological flaws and unsupported claims.

A new peer review published in BMC Medical Research Methodology found that the review lacked statistical rigor, misrepresented evidence, and excluded key studies without justification.

Headed by pediatrician Dr. Hilary Cass, the Cass report dismissed gender-affirming medical care as unreliable, recommending “exploratory therapy,” which critics argue is akin to conversion therapy.

The review applied biased analytical methods, misquoted previous studies, and selectively adapted assessment tools to justify anti-trans conclusions.

It also advocated randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for puberty blockers, which experts denounced as unethical. Despite its flaws, the Cass Review influenced policies, leading to a U.K. ban on puberty blockers and contributing to restrictive health measures in the U.S.

Chris Noone and his colleagues write:

Using the ROBIS tool, we identified a high risk of bias in each of the systematic reviews driven by unexplained protocol deviations, ambiguous eligibility criteria, inadequate study identification, and the failure to integrate consideration of these limitations into the conclusions derived from the evidence syntheses. We also identified methodological flaws and unsubstantiated claims in the primary research that suggest a double standard in the quality of evidence produced for the Cass report compared to quality appraisal in the systematic reviews.

Experts urge policymakers to reject the report, calling for research centered on patient autonomy and accurate scientific analysis.

The Trump-administration publishes review of trans kids that is ignoring the scientific consensus

image

The Trump administration has released a 400-page review on gender dysphoria treatment for youth but has withheld the names of its authors. They are probably ashamed of all the fake science.

The US Department of Health and Human Services report claims that scientific evidence does not support gender-affirming medical interventions for minors, aligning with President Trump’s broader efforts to restrict transgender healthcare and research.

CNN writes that for years, major mainstream medical associations – including the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the Endocrine Society, the American Psychological Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry – have affirmed the practice of gender-affirming care and agree that it’s clinically appropriate care that can provide lifesaving treatment for children and adults.

Many organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association, have criticized the report, arguing that it misrepresents medical consensus and could harm transgender youth.

Studies show that gender-affirming care significantly reduces depression and suicide risk among trans individuals. A recent survey of more than 90,000 transgender people in the United States that found an overwhelming majority report more life satisfaction after having transitioned.

The administration has enacted policies banning federal funding for gender-affirming treatments and restricting transgender participation in sports. These moves are politically motivated rather than based on scientific evidence.

More on this here:

Gender transition care for trans children and teens lacks evidence of benefits and poses risks, according to a new report released by Trump. Medical experts describes it as poor quality research that threatens access to care.

Norwegian Conservatives defend the use of the Pride flag against proposed ban in schools

image

The Norwegian Christian People’s Party wants to ban the Pride flag in public schools. The Conservative Party wants to protect the rainbow flag.

For an American trying to get to grips with the Norwegian party landscape the Norwegian right wing may be more than a little confusing.

At the moment there are no less than four parties that might be designated as “conservative”: The Conservative Party (Høyre), the Christian People’s Party (KrF) and The Progress Party (Fremskrittspartiet) are all considered right wing. There is also the Center Party (Senterpartiet), which pretends to be centrist, but is in fact a right wing, rural, populist party.

Supporters of the centrist Conservative Party would normally fit well within the Democratic Party in the US. The Progress Party is a populist anti-immigrant party, but unlike the MAGA movement it is in support of public social welfare (i.e. a strong state).

As far as LGBTQ issues go, they have all claimed that they are pro-LGBTQ, to the point of leaders taking part in Pride parades.

The Christian People’s Party moves to the right

The Christian People’s Party have, however, for the last few years been gradually moving from the center to the more extreme right and has now adapted what can only be seen as an explicit anti-LGBTQ standpoint.

The party is now in support of banning the use of the Pride flag in public schools. Note that nearly all Norwegian schools are publicly owned.

David Hansen, KrF’s first candidate for parliament in Østfold, protested, calling this a “Viktor Orban”-policy. He is right. KrF is clearly trying to gain support by appealing to traditionalist conformity and fear of those outside the cis/het norm, just like Orban.

In the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten KrF’s leader, Dag-Inge Ulstein, make use of an old right wing populist trick, presenting the Norwegian flag as a symbol uniting all the people of Norway. In other words: There is no need for a Pride flag, which only causes confusion and uncertainty.

He tries to connect the Pride flag to the main Norwegian LGBTQ-organization Fri, which is supporting “surrogacy, liberalization of gender reassignment and abolition of the sex purchase law.” Since Fri is political, the flag becomes political, as Ulstein sees it.

In other words: The Norwegian flag is not political, because it apparently represents values KrF, a political party, can stand behind, while the Pride flag should be banned in schools, because it is political.

Politics are political, and fighting for social inclusion of marginalized groups has been the explicit goal of all Norwegian governments for decades.

The last time a party tried to appeal to some kind of national unity “outside politics” in Norway, was Vidkun Quisling’s National Unity Party (Nasjonal samling) in the 1930s. Quisling is not a good role model for any democratic party.

Politicians support the use of the rainbow flag

As far as we can see, representatives for most of the other Norwegian parties have criticized KrF for this move.

Alexander Papas of the Socialist Left Party says:

“Removing the pride flag from schoolyards is not creating peace. It is giving in to the forces that want to make queer people invisible – and who would rather see them as non-existent.”

Julianne Ferskaug of the Liberals says:

“In many countries we are now seeing how human rights are being undermined, and queer people are being used as scapegoats in a larger political game. Making the safety of queer youth a political issue is harmful and protects no one.”

Frøya Skjold of the Green Party (Miljøpartiet De Grønne) also supports the use of the flag in schools.

Anti-LGBTQ tendencies

We have not found a response to the proposal from the populist Progress Party yet, but last year local representatives united with the Marxist Red Party (Rødt) in order to ban the use of the Pride flag in Oslo. The Progress Party has supported a ban of the public use of the Pride flag in several municipalities.

The Center Party’s MP Jenny Klinge, a Norwegian TERF, has promoted policies similar to the one of KrF. However, the party officially supports “initiatives and plans aimed at increasing acceptance of LGBT+ people in all communities and strengthening efforts against hate crime.”

Conservative support of the Pride flag

For Americans it might be interesting to see how Tina Bru, deputy leader of the Conservative Party, addresses the KrF proposal.

image

Tina Bru (Photo: Hans Kristian Thorbjørnsen CC)

Bru argues that children do not need protection from love and tolerance but rather from intolerance, hatred, and rhetoric that fuels discriminatory attitudes.

She brings up the 2022 homophobic and transphobic terrorist attack in Oslo, as well as other incidents of hate crimes against LGBTQ+ individuals, including attacks, bullying, and exclusion faced by queer children and teenagers in Norway.

She emphasizes the importance of schools being safe spaces for all students, especially those who may already feel marginalized.

Bru argues that banning the Pride flag sends a harmful message to children who have same-sex parents or are struggling with their identity.

She refutes claims that exposure to LGBTQ+ themes would influence children’s sexual orientation, stressing that inclusion fosters respect rather than changes identity:

“No one becomes queer because they see a rainbow flag waving. No one becomes queer from learning that we should treat everyone with respect. No one becomes queer from including queer love in the community.”

She expresses frustration that the same debate surfaces every year, with opponents spreading conspiracy theories about the Pride movement. She maintains that the flag represents freedom, safety, and the right to love without fear.:

“It is not an option for my children to grow up in a society where we were unable to stand against the forces that want to hide all colors.”

Americans conservatives could learn a lot from the real conservatives of Norway.

How JK Rowling and other transphobes are forcing men to use women’s restrooms

image

One of the clear signs of bigotry is how its proponents do not  understand the unintended consequences of their own irrational hatred. They need their “solutions” to their imaginary problems to be neat and easy to handle.

J. K. Rowling and the TERFs (trans-exclusionary radical feminists) celebrated their UK Supreme Court victory this week as a victory for women (i.e. cis women).

They clearly believe that this means that trans women will  be excluded from women’s spaces, including bathrooms, in the future.

What they have not considered is  the fact that they have now opened the doors of women’s bathrooms to men.

Indeed, if the British government follows up on this Supreme Court madness (gender reduced to “biological sex” at birth), trans men will be forced to either use the women’s room or break the law.

A trans man in the restroom

Imagine this scenario: A trans man (indistinguishable from a cis man) walks into a woman’s restroom to do their thing. Imagine one of the women in there alerting a male friend or the staff about this male incursion into female spaces. This may quickly escalate into something ugly.
