The homophobes and transphobes have taken a beating in American politics

The Democrat’s victory over the Republicans in the US midterm elections is already delivering results for LGBTQA people, transgender people included.

Massachusetts voters overwhelmingly affirmed that transgender people deserve to be treated with dignity and respect by upholding nondiscrimination protections for transgender people in public places.

Governor-elect Laura Kelly has promised to reinstate LGBT+ anti-discrimination protections in Kansas.

Pink News has more about the Kansas case.

Democrat Harley Rouda emerged victorious on Saturday in his congressional race against 15-term incumbent and noted anti-LGBTQ Republican Dana Rohrabacher in California’s Orange County. Rouda has argued strongly in support for LGBTQA people.

Meanwhile, Colorado’s Jared Polis became the first openly gay person elected governor in America.

The new Democratic majority in the House has promised to expand LGBT civil rights protections, and Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., indicated transgender military service will be a top priority when he is expected to become the new House Armed Services chairman in January.

The tide seems to be turning in the US. I am glad. I have had trouble sleeping during the last two years, seeing how racists, sexists, homophobes and transphobes have been allowed to influence American politics.

A final reminder: The LGBTQA and transgender struggle is not a fight between Conservatives and Liberals. It might look that way in the US, now that Trump is controlling the Republican party, but this is not the case in other parts of the world. 

In my own country, Norway, the government has a married gay minister of health who has introduced new legislation accepting and protecting transgender people. In spite of what the impression you might get from the newspaper coverage, the British Conservative party is also pro-trans. In Britain some of the most vocal anti-transgender voices are actually left wing women who call themselves radical feminists.
