How to be an ally to trans, enby and GNC people

This poster is made by Wednesday, a queer and agender / non binary artist living in London. Their art is colourful and inspiring, and being an ally myself, I found this one particularily useful. The advice is:

  • Listen to and share stories. Act when asked to, and know when to ‘pass the mic’
  • If you see someone bing harrassed, talk to the victim only. Ask if they are OK, and can you help get them somewhere safe
  • Let trans, enby and GNC people speak for themselves
  • Use your privilege to ask for gender neutral language and toilets. Ask for your office to have trans awareness training
  • Challenge transphobia
  • Prioritise pronound
  • Hire trans, enby and GNC people
  • Learn for yourself. Don’t ecpect emotional labour

Portraits Show Gender Diversity

[A]s trans people gain visibility and understanding as people who identify as male or female despite being assigned a different gender at birth, a greater gap in understanding exists for gender non-conforming (GNC) and non-binary trans individuals.

“Not content with identifying or expressing themselves as only either men or women, we feel and show genders that mix, vary, and/or go beyond these categories and may identify as genderqueer, agender, two spirit, neutrois, gender fluid, and third gender, among many others,” explains Julián Padilla, LGBTQ Justice Organizer for GLOBE, the Brooklyn LGBTQ Committee of Make the Road NY (MTRNY).

In association with […](MTRNY), and the Queens Museum, Brooklyn-based portrait photographer Benedict Evans presents a series of photographs which celebrate a community of transgender, genderqueer, agender, androgyne, and gender fluid men and women living in Brooklyn and Queens, New York City.
