If gay people can safely be teachers, then trans people can safely use bathrooms

image

The transgender bathroom debate has nothing to do with threats against women and children, and everything about some people’s desperate need to protect old-fashioned and sexist views of sex and gender identity.

They mistakenly believe that if people are allowed to explore their own gender, their whole culture will collapse.

There is nothing new in this. Conservative traditionalist used the exact same tactic vis-a-vis gay and lesbian people, and not that long ago. They lost that battle. Homosexuality is no longer considered a sin or a mental illness, at least not by the majority.

And do you know what? Men still fall in love with women, marry and have kids. Sex offenders are much more likely to be cis and straight than gay or trans.

The homophobes used lies, bad science and false statistics to “prove” that gay men was a threat to children, and that they could turn young boys and girls into homosexuals just by being with them.

These days the same kind of people use lies, bad science and false statistics to “prove” that transgender people are a threat to women and children.

Zack Ford writes:

And this is where it becomes most obvious the way the anti-transgender activists of 2017 are relying on the exact same scare tactic that anti-gay activists used in 1978. Conservatives in California tried that year to pass Proposition 6, which would have banned gays, lesbians, and any of their allies from teaching in California’s public schools. It was called the Briggs Initiative, named for state Sen. John Briggs, who championed it.

Briggs’ primary argument against gay teachers was his belief that gay people were more likely to be child molesters. Often, Briggs insisted that gay people could only perpetuate their existence by “recruiting” young people, the implication being that molestation was how that recruitment functioned. “Safety” was the primary argument then as it is in anti-trans campaigns now.

Here is gay pioneer activist Harvey Milk challenging Senator Briggs back in 1978. Sounds familiar doesn’t it?

Homophobic ads insinuated that gay men and lesbian women were sexual perverts who could make children gay.

The defenders of gay rights won the battle against the bigots. The law was defeated. Here’s one of the pro-LGBT campaign flyers.

Good News! The Transphobic Bathroom Bullies are Losing!

image

The Daily Beast has a very interesting article on how the transphobic bathroom law proposals in the US are being rejected. All of them, including the ones in Texas and North Carolina.

The Daily Beast argues that there are two reasons for this backlash to the transgender backlash:

First: The company boycott of states that implement such laws has become extremely painful and costly.

Secondly: The transgender movement has managed to give trans people a human face. People who started out supporting the law suddenly realize that there is a 7 year old kid out there who now has a target on his or her back.

“I think the [2016] bill was vetoed because we put a face to the issue,” said Adam Dale Jorgensen, volunteer coordinator for the South Dakota LGBT nonprofit Center for Equality, which helped arrange the February 2016 meeting between [Governor] Daugaard and transgender students.

In Jorgensen’s estimation, it was the human angle that sealed the deal in his state: “I think the economic side really started it—and I think the conservative side of South Dakota, which is most of it, was really driven by that—and then the final, personal aspect really drove the nail through and they were like ‘Holy cow, these are real people.’”

Most Americans Oppose Transgender Bathroom Laws

The Huffington Post writes:

  • Seven in ten Americans favor laws that provide protection from discrimination to LGBT people.
  • A majority (53%) of Americans oppose laws that require transgender people to use bathrooms that correspond to their sex at birth.
  • Six in ten favor allowing gay and lesbian couples to marry legally, and this number continues to grow.

Trans Pastor About Texas Bathroom Bill: 'Stop Using God As An Excuse To Hate'

The Huffington Post writes:

The Rev. S. David Wynn, a senior pastor from Agape Metropolitan Community Church in Fort Worth, Texas, spoke Tuesday to hundreds of LGBTQ advocates protesting the bill outside the state Capitol in Austin.

“In the beginning, God created humankind in God’s image. … So God is transgender, ” Wynn said, to which the crowd roared in approval. “We’re all created in the image of what is holy and divine and sacred, and we should all be treated that way.”

More than 200 people, including Wynn, testified against Senate Bill 6, known as the “Texas bathroom bill,” during a public hearing with the Senate State Affairs Committee that began Tuesday morning and spilled into Wednesday morning.

Being transgender is not a choice!

image

Leslie P. Henderson, professor of physiology and neurobiology at Dartmouth’s Geisel School of Medicine, documents that being trans is not a choice:

I have spent more than two decades studying sex-specific differences in the brain.

I hazard a guess that I know more than most people on this issue, although I also know that we scientists have only a rudimentary understanding of how genetic, epigenetic, hormonal and environmental factors interact during brain development and into adulthood to form the incredibly diverse and complex spectrum that forms gender roles and gender identity.

But, I know for damn sure that biology is a big part of it, and it is not simply what sex gets put on your birth certificate — an assignment that is predominantly based on whether or not one has a penis.

There are numerous biological conditions, such as androgen insensitivity syndrome, 5-alpha reductase deficiency or Rokitansky syndrome, in which individuals with either XY and XX chromosomes are born without a normal vagina or uterus but also without a penis, and are nearly always assigned to be “a girl.”

It has to do with the biology of your brain…

It is not a choice when meta-analysis of suicide rates indicates that lifetime prevalence of attempted suicide in transgender individuals is ~40 percent as opposed to ~4 percent in the overall population. It is not the same as deciding whether you will wear a red tie or a green one.

3 myths in the transgender bathroom debate

image

CNN has a very useful overview over what allowing transgender to use the bathroom of their real gender actually means:

CNN found one case of a Seattle man who allegedly undressed in a women’s locker room in 2016, citing Washington’s anti-discrimination law as motivation.

Otherwise, whenever the topic comes up in the news, prosecutors, law enforcement agencies and state human rights commissions have consistently denied that there is any correlation between such policies and a spike in assaults.

CNN reached out to 20 law enforcement agencies in states with anti-discrimination policies covering gender identity. None who answered reported any bathroom assaults after the policies took effect.

On the  other hand: In one of the largest surveys of transgender and gender non-conforming Americans ever conducted, 70% of respondents reported being denied access, verbally harassed, or physically assaulted in public restrooms.

The Real Cause for Bathroom Hysteria

image

Following some intense yelling from a transphobic troll over at Breitbart (yeah, I know…) I added the following comment:

“You are saying that because there is a microscopic chance that some perverted man will pretend to be a trans woman in order to get access to women’s bathrooms, all transgender women should be forced to go to the men’s bathroom (where they probably will be raped by the same pervert).

That is just cruel. You are basically saying that transgender women should no longer be allowed to to restrooms and relieve themselves in public areas, which means not going to restaurants, clubs, malls, churches. You are forcing them back into the closet.

But you are not willing to use the same logic in other areas of life. The chance of a child being molested by a non-transgender male is immensely greater than it being abused by someone trans. Indeed, that happens all the time, in churches, schools, sports, kindergartens, at home. Following your logic, we will completely have to stop men from interacting with children.

Moreover, we also know that men abuse women all the time, from Trump “grabbing them by the ….” to rape and murder. Following your logic all men should be excluded from public places.

Which means that women and children would be the only ones left (hadn’t it been for the fact that women have also been known to abuse children).

But you are clearly not willing to think these things through, because you are not driven by a concern for women and children, but by a fear of people you cannot understand.

I will let you in on a secret: Trans people are just people, like everyone else.”

1 in 137 US teenagers identify as transgender, a recent study finds. Trans is beautiful, trans kids are everywhere and their identities are valid.

That’s why I was so happy to see this article in Huffington Post highlighting celebrities standing up for trans kids against the administration. I hope you bask in their love and support <3 But if you are in a bad place, remember you are not alone:
