The hypersexualization of queerness is used to both hurt queer people and prevent the spread of information about us or our history.

Hypersexualization hurts queer people in a lot of ways.  First, the “gay people are all evil pedophilic perverts” Rush Limbaugh kind of way.  But also, by excluding minors and asexuals and aromantics from queer spaces (since the wider queer community, and especially cis gays and lesbians, are relatively complicit in this stereotype).  And then, when queer hypersexualization intersects with racist hypersexualization (or sometimes desexualization).  And then when either or both of those intersects with transmisogyny and the trope of the transfeminine body as a walking, invasive penis.  Or all the stereotypes about bisexuality.  Or literally the entire history of the AIDS crisis and why and how it became a crisis.  You see where I’m going.

But also, hypersexualization is an effective way of shutting down information.  It’s an excuse for preventing high schoolers from learning about queerness or queer history, because “it’s about sex.”  Heck, it even shuts down reading general works by queer authors, because those are imputed to be too sexual propter hominem–last year, on a break, I casually mentioned that I was reading Sappho for Greek class, and my mom thought it was explicit lesbian porn.  (All of Sappho’s work exists in fragments, and it’s more sfw than most of Shakespeare, and most of classical love elegy, too.)  Queer people are deemed universally unfit to be around children/teens because our existence is deemed too sexual.  And so our history, existence, achievements, continuity, and terminology are erased, and we become “a bunch of teenagers making up words on tumblr” to further discredit us; and meanwhile queer teens are denied community and the concepts and words to describe themselves.

Golbat has several posts of relevance to this topic:

Hypersexualization works differently for different queer identities and with intersections with other identities.  Some identities may be simultaneously hypersexualized and desexualized.

Queerphobic discourse relies on two main stigmas: hypersexualization and unnaturalness.  While most oppressions have components of hypersexualization, queerphobia is unique in having it be foundational.

In Russia transgender people and fetishists will now lose their driving licences

image

Trans people, crossdreamers, crossdressers and fetihsist are now banned from driving a car in Russia – at least if they tell someone about their sex or gender variance.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has signed into law legislation that bans people with “sex disorders” and other physical and emotional “disorders” or challenges  from driving.

This also means that transgender people are no longer allowed to drive, as these are listed as suffering from mental disorders in the international manual the legislation refers to (the ICD-10).

The Russian Association of Lawyers argues that the new law also applies to bigender and asexual people. Whether gay and lesbian people are included is unclear.

The official goal is  to reduce the number of on-road motor vehicle accidents. From a scientific point of view this makes – of course – no sense. The driving skills of transsexuals, crossdressers or  BDSM enthusiasts are clearly not inferior to the ones of the straight cis-people Putin so strongly admires.

But that is not what this is about, is it? This is an efficient way of forcing gender and sexual variance back into the closet, while at the same time making them scapegoats for all the ills Putin himself has inflicted on the Russian people.

This is fascism, plain and simple.

This is why all LGBTQA people must always be vigilant, fighting  the sexist bigots out there consistently and vigorously.

Update January 19: It seems the Russians have made a u-turn: Transgender people may keep their driver’s licences.

ANOMALYETERNAL: Fascinating blog on sex, gender, identity and sexuality

A lot of work has gone into this brand new blog on gender and sexuality. Think of it as a sex and gender dictionary, if you like!

The site has been set up by Evelyn, an aromantic asexual androgyne.

Take a look!

It is just…so fucking weird how threatened people feel when it comes to Asexuality.  I still can’t wrap my mind around it.

I’m so happy this post is being reblogged by LBGT+ people who aren’t asexual. I keep on reading posts by non-ace LGBT+ people of support to the ace community, and of being stunned by this reaction by a movement which should know better than to judge. AND THAT MAKES THIS ACE SO FREAKING HAPPY. The woman in the first photo expresses my sentiment. I know I belong in the queer/LGBTQIA movement. I want to belong. But I just don’t know if I’m welcome. I’m so happy that there are so many people on Tumblr who do not fall into the catagory of outright refusal of asexuality.

I know not a lot of people understand asexuality. And I know there’s confusion about it, about our experiences, and about how we fit in the movement. But let’s talk about this. Let’s have this conversation.

Of course you belong! This should be about embracing diversity.
